Paper Contact Details Abstract This paper is a brief case study of the establishment and progress of Business Ventures, the business arm of Eccles College. It is structured to reflect work on the role of retrospective rationalisation in management thinking. I propose to consider the situation of establishing the Business Ventures Unit in terms of the garbage can model and associated loose coupling. In his more recent writing, Weick has absorbed the earlier garbage can concepts into his theories of sensemaking, and these too prove useful. This paper is a brief case study of the establishment and progress of Business Ventures, the business arm of Eccles College. The paper attempts to make sense, in Schon’s and Weick’s terms, of the case study of the establishment of Business Ventures at Eccles College. It has used the concept of the garbage can to illustrate how an organisation can be developed in a flexible manner, utilising opportunities as they arise in a dynamic situation. It does not argue that readers should now reject all their rational planning approaches, but that they should consider that there is a very strong element of retrospective rationalisation in every account of how an organisation achieved its current status. Also, in order to make sense of situations in which they find themselves, readers may find that use of a garbage can type analysis can help them to formulate a problem for subsequent resolution.

Fire detection using video sequences in urban out-door environment
Nowadays automated early warning systems are essential in human life. One of these systems is fire detection which plays an important role in surveillance and security systems because the fire can spread quickly and cause great damage to an area. Traditional fire detection methods usually are based on smoke and temperature detectors (sensors). These methods cannot work properly in large space a...

Abstract Fire in natural resources is one of the crises that causes irreparable damage to ecosystems and the environment every year. The purpose of this research is to attempt to study areas of risk aversion and to prepare a map of forest fire hazard area by integrating topographic data and other additional information from a GIS system for Golestan province. متن کاملA Fire Ignition Model and Its Application for Estimating Loss due to Damage of the Urban Gas Network in an Earthquake
Damage of the urban gas network due to an earthquake can cause much loss including fire-induced loss to infrastructure and loss due to interruption of gas service and repairing or replacing of network elements. In this paper, a new fire ignition model is proposed and applied to a conventional semi-probabilistic model for estimating various losses due to damage of an urban gas network in an eart...
